What is a mass DM on Telegram, exactly?
A mass DM on Telegram means sending the same private message, or a lightly personalised version of it, to a long list of people's one-to-one chats instead of posting it once in a channel. People also call it mass dm telegram, bulk DM or a DM blast. The phrase covers three very different machines, and they behave differently.
- A bot broadcast. Your bot writes to everyone who started it. This is the official route, and Telegram documents its speed limits.
- A user-account script. A program logs in as a normal Telegram account and messages usernames from a list, often scraped from public groups. Most GitHub tools work this way.
- A team working by hand. People reply to warm leads one by one, sometimes from several business accounts.
Only the first and the third hold up over months. The second is fast, and that speed is exactly what makes recipients press "Report spam".
Which way of sending reaches whom?
The audience you are allowed to reach depends on the route, not on the software. This is how the options compare, using Telegram's own documentation where it publishes a number.
| Route | Who can receive it | Published speed | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bot broadcast (Bot API) | Only users who started the bot | About 30 messages a second free; up to 1,000 with paid broadcasts | People block the bot if messages are too frequent |
| Channel post | Subscribers, in the channel feed rather than a DM | No per-message limit for the owner | Unsubscribes and muting |
| User-account script | Anyone whose privacy settings allow it | None published; accounts hit flood errors | Spam reports, account limits, session theft from bad code |
| Manual replies | People who wrote first or saved your number | Human speed | Slow, but almost never reported |
The paid broadcast tier is narrower than it sounds. Telegram's Bots FAQ says a bot needs at least 100,000 Stars on its balance and at least 100,000 monthly active users before it can switch it on, and every message above the free 30 per second costs 0.1 Stars. For a new brand, the free tier is the real ceiling, and a few thousand opted-in users clear it in minutes anyway.
What do the GitHub mass DM bots for Telegram actually do?
On 16 October 2026 we ran GitHub's repository search for the phrase people type into Google for these tools, and read every result. The search returned 33 repositories, and the same search with the word bot added returned 12. We sorted the top 30 by stars and by last push, and then read each description and README.
- The most-starred repository had 72 stars, and its last push was on 27 August 2022. It logs in with several accounts, scrapes members from public groups and DMs them by username. Sending by phone number is kept behind a private contact.
- Only 10 of the 27 Telegram mass-messaging tools in that list had been updated in 2025 or 2026. Telegram changes its limits more often than that.
- Four repositories formed two copy-paste pairs, with the same keyword-stuffed description (a long run of "mass dm tool… spammer tool…") under different throwaway account names. Treat that pattern as a warning sign before you download anything.
- Several tools bundle a member scraper, an auto-joiner and "report automation" into one package, so the same tool that sends your DMs can also be used to file mass reports.
So a GitHub search for these tools mostly turns up user-account scripts built on Telethon, the Python library for Telegram's MTProto API. To run one, you hand it your phone number, the login code and the session file it keeps afterwards. Telegram's API Terms of Service forbid apps that make "actions on behalf of the user" without that user's knowledge and consent. A script that messages strangers from a scraped list sits right next to that line, and a fork of unknown origin can upload the session to its author.
Whatever you take from a mass DM bot repo on GitHub, run it on a spare account, read the code before you enter a login code, and never point it at people who did not ask to hear from you.
Why does a mass direct message to strangers get an account limited?
Recipients decide, not the software. Telegram's Spam FAQ says that when people press "Report spam", moderators review the forwarded messages and can limit the sender temporarily. For a first offence that is "most likely" a few days, and repeat offences bring longer limits. During a limit the account can still message people who saved its number and reply to anyone who writes first. Starting new chats with strangers is what stops working.
"People do mind getting unsolicited advertisements, links, invite links to groups or channels." Telegram Spam FAQ
The same page says the content barely matters in private chats. A plain "hello" can be reported if the person finds it unwelcome. That is why rotating accounts, spinning the text or adding delays does not rescue a mass direct message telegram campaign aimed at a scraped list. Each new recipient is another person who can report it. The general Terms of Service put it plainly: by signing up you agree not to use the service to send spam.
There is also a newer barrier. Telegram Premium users can now charge Stars to people outside their contacts who want to message them, so some cold DMs now cost money before anyone reads them.
How does our Telegram DM campaign service work?
Our mass DM service for Telegram is a managed telegram dm campaign for audiences that already said yes: bot subscribers, customers who gave their Telegram handle at checkout, webinar sign-ups who chose Telegram reminders, or a community that asked for launch alerts. It runs in five steps.
- Audience check. We look at where every contact came from. A list without a record of how people opted in gets cut down to the part that has one, or it gets rejected.
- Route choice. In most cases that means a bot broadcast. A channel post with a pinned reply thread works better when the news is the same for everyone.
- Message set. We write an opener, one follow-up and a clear way out ("reply STOP" or a mute button), and test them on a small segment first.
- Pacing. Sends stay well under the 30-per-second bot limit and go out at local hours, so nobody gets woken up at 3 a.m. by a promotion.
- Report. You get delivered, read where the route exposes it, replies, blocks and unsubscribes, so the next message is based on real data.
The step that surprises clients most is the first one. When we checked the GitHub tools for this page, nearly every one began with a member scraper, which means the list itself is the problem. A clean list of 800 people who pressed Start does more than 20,000 scraped usernames, and it keeps the bot alive for the next send.
We do not sell lists, scrape groups, rent "aged" accounts or promise reply numbers. If what you want is reach to strangers, we will usually suggest growing a channel instead, because a channel lets people choose to follow you.
When is bulk DM on Telegram the wrong tool?
Bulk DM on Telegram is the wrong tool more often than sellers admit. Skip it in these cases:
- The list came from scraping a group, buying a database or "members export" software.
- The message is the same for everyone and nobody needs to reply. A channel post does that job without filling anyone's private chats.
- You need a response from people who never heard of you. Ads, creator partnerships and a good channel bring them to you first.
- You plan to send more than one promotion a week to the same people. Block rates climb fast after the second message.
When the audience is warm and the message is useful to each person, a direct message is still the most personal thing Telegram offers. That is the only kind of bulk dm telegram work we take on.
