Telegram broadcast: channel, broadcast group, or bot?

Updated · 2244 words · 10 min read

Most people searching this want the WhatsApp button that sends one message to a saved list. Telegram never built that button. It built three bigger tools instead, and choosing between them decides who reads you.

A telegram broadcast is one message delivered to many people at once. Telegram has no WhatsApp-style broadcast list, so you broadcast through a channel (no subscriber cap, only admins post), a broadcast group (a very large group where only admins write), or a bot that messages people who pressed Start, free up to about 30 per second.

Does Telegram have broadcast lists the way WhatsApp does?

No. Does Telegram have broadcast at all? Yes, but not as a list. WhatsApp lets you save contacts into a list and send each of them a private copy. Telegram has no such screen, so a search for how to create broadcast list in Telegram ends in workarounds.

The closest thing is the forward screen. Tap and hold a message, choose Forward, and tick several chats before sending. Put the same people in a chat folder first and the routine gets faster. It works for a family update or ten clients, and that is about where it should stop: every copy lands as a private message from your account, so people who did not expect it can report it.

A Telegram broadcast list in the WhatsApp sense is therefore the wrong goal past a few dozen people. The formats below scale, cost nothing in most cases, and the people receiving them chose to be there.

Telegram broadcast channels, groups and bots compared

Broadcast in Telegram comes in four shapes. The table sorts them by the questions clients ask us first: how many people, who can talk back, and who has to opt in.

FormatAudience ceilingWho can writeHow people get inBest for
Telegram broadcast channelNo subscriber capAdmins only; readers can react or comment if a discussion group is linkedThey join the channelNews, offers, regular updates
Telegram broadcast group (gigagroup)Above the 200,000 cap of a normal supergroupAdmins onlyThey join a public link; nobody can be added by inviteA community that outgrew its group
Broadcast botEveryone who pressed StartThe bot; each person can reply privatelyThey start the botPersonal alerts, order updates, segments
Forward to several chatsA handful of chatsEveryone, in their own chatThey already talk to youSmall, personal sends

Telegram broadcast channels win most of the time, because reach costs nothing and grows without a cap. The group and the bot earn their place in narrower cases, covered next.

How do you broadcast on a Telegram channel, step by step?

If you want to know how to broadcast on Telegram channel style, or simply how to create telegram broadcast reach from zero, the channel is the answer. Here is how to create broadcast in Telegram with one, in the order we set them up for clients:

  • First, create it. Open the pencil or new message menu, pick New Channel, and give it a name people would search for.
  • Choose public or private. A public channel gets a t.me username and shows up in search. A private one only spreads by invite link.
  • Write the description. Say what you post and how often. It is the first thing a visitor reads before joining.
  • Link a discussion group if you want comments under posts. Without one, readers can only react.
  • Last, post. Type the message and send. It reaches every subscriber at once. Long-press send to schedule it or send it silently.

That is also the short answer to how to broadcast telegram updates, how to broadcast message on telegram, and how to send broadcast message on telegram without a bot: post it in your channel. The hard part is not the button. It is giving people a reason to join, which is a content job rather than a settings job.

When should you make a broadcast group in Telegram instead of a channel?

Only when a group already exists and has grown huge. A normal supergroup holds up to 200,000 members, according to Telegram's API documentation on channels and groups. Past that point Telegram can offer the admin a conversion to a gigagroup, which the docs describe as something between a channel and a supergroup. Members stay, but only admins can post, nobody can be invited in, and voice chat participants start muted.

So how to create broadcast group in Telegram has a plain answer: you do not start one from scratch. You grow a group, and the conversion appears when the app suggests it to the owner. People asking how to make broadcast group in Telegram for a fresh audience almost always want a channel, which gives the same one-way posting with no member ceiling and no waiting.

The conversion is worth it when the group's value was the crowd and the chat itself turned into noise. If members still answer each other's questions, keep the group and open a channel beside it for announcements.

How does a Telegram bot broadcast message reach people?

A telegram bot broadcast goes to each person in a private chat, which feels personal, but only to people who pressed Start, wrote to the bot, or added it to a group. A bot cannot open a conversation with a stranger, and sends to anyone else fail. Every Start gives the bot that person's chat ID, so the stored IDs are the whole audience.

That makes a broadcast bot telegram setup good at segments a channel cannot do. One bot can send a delivery alert to the 400 people who ordered this week and leave everyone else alone. A telegram bot broadcast message can also carry buttons that lead back to a shop, a form, or the channel.

When you pick a telegram broadcast bot, check two things. It should run on a bot token you created in @BotFather, not on your phone number and login code. And its subscriber list should come only from people who started it, never from an imported file. Our guide to Telegram message senders, their send speed and Stars bill compares the tools that sit behind these bots.

What is the Telegram broadcast limit, and when is a paid broadcast worth it?

Channels have no send limit you will notice: one post, every subscriber. The Telegram broadcast limit that matters belongs to bots. The Bots FAQ says a bot sends about 30 messages per second for free. A telegram paid broadcast, switched on in @BotFather, raises that to 1,000 per second at 0.1 Stars per message above the free rate. The bot needs at least 100,000 Stars on its balance and at least 100,000 monthly active users.

Take a bot with 250,000 active users and one urgent message. At the free rate it takes about 2 hours 20 minutes to reach everyone. With paid broadcast it takes a little over 4 minutes, and about 242,500 of those messages fall above the free rate, which is roughly 24,250 Stars.

That price makes sense for a flash sale that ends in an hour or a service alert. For a weekly newsletter, two hours is fine and costs nothing. Most bots never reach the 100,000 user floor, so for them the question does not come up.

How many subscribers actually read a broadcast message on Telegram?

Fewer than the subscriber count suggests, and the gap is the number we plan around. When we checked a large news channel for this page on 17 October 2026, we opened the public web preview of the channel run by Fana Media Corporation, the Ethiopian broadcaster most people mean by fana broadcasting telegram, at t.me/s/fanatelevision. It showed 204K subscribers, 85.4K photos and 2.52K videos.

We logged the 20 newest posts. They went out between 12:07 and 21:59 UTC on 16 October, so roughly two posts an hour. Their view counters ran from 3.34K to 9.61K, with a median near 7.6K. That is about 3.7% of subscribers per post, and the highest reached about 4.7%. The newest posts were still collecting views, so the low end will rise, but not by multiples. The shape inside the 20 was telling too: the highest counts, 8.4K to 9.6K, sat in the middle of the run, posts 6 to 13, while the five newest posts we saw were all at 5.6K or below, having been online only a few hours. Telegram counts a view per account rather than per visit, so the counter tracks people who scrolled the post into sight, not repeat opens by the same reader.

A busy news channel posting all day is an extreme case, since each post buries the last. A channel posting once a day usually sees a far larger share. Still, the lesson holds for any broadcast message Telegram delivers: the subscriber number is the ceiling, and post frequency eats into it.

How can you tell a named broadcast channel like Schanzenwatch is genuine?

Search the name in Telegram, then confirm the handle on the organisation's own website or social profile before you join or forward anything. Copycat channels borrow names and logos of popular broadcasters all the time.

Some names do not lead to a channel at all. The page for schanzenwatch broadcast telegram searches, t.me/schanzenwatch, showed a contact page with a Send Message button when we opened it on 17 October 2026, not a public channel feed. That means it belongs to a person or a bot, so there was no post history to read and no subscriber count to check. Treat any account like that with more care than a channel, because a private chat is where scam links usually arrive.

For your own broadcast, the same check works in reverse. Put your channel link on your website and profiles so readers can verify it the same way.

Bulk messaging on Telegram versus a broadcast people chose

At the point where the people receiving it never chose to. Bulk messaging on Telegram through a channel, a broadcast group, or a started bot is opt-in by design. Sending the same text as private messages to people who never joined anything is a different activity, and Telegram's spam FAQ explains that unwanted messages get reported and accounts get limited, usually for a few days on a first offence.

Private messages still have a place when the list opted in, such as past customers who asked for updates. Our page on running opt-in direct message campaigns on Telegram covers how we pace and screen those sends.

The other route is growing the audience a broadcast can reach. If you run a group and want it bigger before it ever needs a gigagroup conversion, see how adding members in bulk works at each group headcount. A channel or group people joined on purpose remains the cheapest broadcast you will ever send.

Should a channel post replace SMS, email, or cold outreach?

Usually it sits beside them. A channel post costs nothing per reader, while a US text message is billed per segment and a WhatsApp template per message, which is the price gap our breakdown of what bulk messaging services cost on each channel lays out. The catch is the audience. A broadcast only reaches people who already joined, so it keeps a warm audience warm and does little for strangers.

Reaching people who have never heard of you is a separate job with its own reply rates and rules. Our page on cold outreach methods and realistic reply math covers it. Once a stranger answers and shows interest, invite them to the channel. From that point the free broadcast does the follow-up.

Broadcast questions, answered short

Can I send one message to many contacts on Telegram without a channel?

Yes, for a few chats. Forward the message and tick several chats on the forward screen. Each person gets a private copy from your account, so keep it to people who expect it.

What is a Telegram broadcast group?

It is a very large group converted into a gigagroup. Only admins can post, members cannot be added by invite, and the option appears for groups that have reached the supergroup ceiling.

Can I schedule a channel post for later?

Yes. Write the post, then press and hold the send button and choose Schedule Message. The same menu has Send Without Sound for posts that should not ping every subscriber.

How fast can a Telegram bot broadcast?

About 30 messages per second for free. Paid broadcasts raise it to 1,000 per second at 0.1 Stars per extra message, for bots with at least 100,000 monthly active users and 100,000 Stars.

Can a broadcast bot message people who never started it?

No. It reaches only people who started it, wrote to it first, or put it in a group; everything else comes back as an error.

How to create broadcast list in Telegram if the app has no list button?

Make a chat folder with the people you want, then forward one message to several of them from the forward screen. Keep it small: each copy is a private message from your account.

Why do my channel views look so low compared with subscribers?

Views count people who opened the post, not people who could. In our 17 October 2026 look at a 204K-subscriber news channel, posts drew about 3.7% of subscribers each, partly because it posts around twice an hour.
