How to send message on Telegram from what you already have
Telegram has one chat window for every private conversation, but there are six different doors into it. Which one you use depends on what you hold: their name in your contacts, a @username, a phone number, a shared group, a channel they run, or a link someone passed you. Once you know your door, how to send a message in Telegram takes about three taps.
| What you have | Where to tap | What can stop you |
|---|---|---|
| A saved contact | Contacts tab, tap the name, type in the box at the bottom | Almost nothing, unless they blocked you |
| A @username | Search (the magnifier), type the handle, open the result, tap Message | A typo; usernames use only a-z, 0-9 and the underscore |
| A phone number you never saved | Contacts, Add Contact, enter the number, then open the new chat | Their privacy setting for who can find them by number |
| A group you both sit in | Tap their name or photo on a message, or open the member list | Hidden members, or their rule on who can write to them |
| A channel they run | The channel's Direct Messages button, if the owner turned it on | Off by default; may carry a Stars price |
| A t.me link or QR code | Open it; Telegram jumps straight to the profile | An old link whose username was released |
If you are trying to work out how to send a message in Telegram to many people at once, that is a different job with different rules. Our notes on running a Telegram broadcast to subscribers who opted in and on what a Telegram message sender tool really does under the hood cover it. This page stays with one person, one chat.
How to DM on Telegram, tap by tap
A Telegram DM is just a one-to-one chat. Nobody has to accept a request first, the way Instagram works, so your first message lands in their main chat list. People phrase it as how to send dm on Telegram, how to send direct message on Telegram, or how to send message in Telegram; the route is the same. Here it is on a phone, which is where most people ask how do you dm on Telegram.
- Open Search. On Android it is the magnifier at the top right; on iPhone, pull the chat list down to reveal the search bar.
- Type the name or the @username. Results split into your chats, contacts, and Global Search. A public handle shows up under Global Search even if you have never spoken.
- Open the profile and tap Message. The chat opens with an empty history and a text box at the bottom.
- Write, then send. Tap the arrow. Long-press it instead and you get Send Without Sound and Schedule Message, handy when the other person is asleep.
- Check the ticks. One tick means delivered to Telegram's servers, two ticks mean the chat was opened.
On Telegram Desktop the steps are the same, only the search box sits above the chat list. One text message holds up to 4,096 characters, the same cap the Bot API sendMessage method lists; past that, the app splits it in two. That answers how do i send a message in Telegram for almost every case. The rest of this page is about the doors that are harder to open.
How to DM someone on Telegram group chats
Groups are where most first contact happens, and the move is simple: tap the person's name or avatar on any message they posted, and their profile opens with a Message button. In large groups you can also open the group info, scroll the member list, and tap from there. That is how to dm on Telegram group members you have never added, and it works the same on phone and desktop.
How to DM in Telegram group chats when members are hidden
Admins of bigger groups can hide the member list, so you only see admins in the group info. You can still reach anyone who has posted, by tapping their message. Someone who never writes in the group has no tap target at all, and that is on purpose: the admin chose it.
A second gate sits on the person's side. If their privacy setting limits new chats to contacts, the Message button still opens, but your text will not go through. People who search how to send private message on telegram group threads often hit this and assume the app is broken. It is not; they said no in advance. A group holds up to 200,000 members, so the people who post every day usually set this rule after one too many cold hellos. If you need to bring people into a Telegram group the consent-first way, that is a separate page.
Can you send a private message in a Telegram channel?
Yes, but only when the owner allows it. Since mid-2025 channels can switch on Direct Messages. The feature is documented on the Telegram API page for channel direct messages: each reader gets their own thread, you do not need to join the channel, and admins with the right permission reply as the channel rather than as themselves.
So the answer to how to send private message in telegram channel pages is: open the channel, look for the message button under its name, and write. If there is no button, the owner has not turned it on. Some owners attach a price in Stars to each message as a spam filter, and the app tells you the cost before you send.
There is no way to message a channel's subscribers from the channel itself. The subscriber list is private to the owner, and even the owner cannot open a chat with a subscriber who did not write first.
How do you send a private message on Telegram that stays on one device?
Every normal chat already counts as a personal message: only you and the other person read it. But regular chats live in Telegram's cloud, so they sync to all your devices. For a chat that does not, you need a secret chat. Open the person's profile, tap the three-dot menu, and pick Start Secret Chat. They have to be online once for it to finish setting up.
| Feature | Regular chat | Secret chat |
|---|---|---|
| Stored in the cloud | Yes, synced to every device | No, only on the two devices that started it |
| Encryption | Client to server | End to end |
| Self-destruct timer | Optional auto-delete | Per chat, down to seconds |
| Forwarding out | Allowed | Blocked |
| Opens on Telegram Desktop | Yes | No |
For most people asking how to send personal message on telegram, the regular chat is what they want. Pick a secret chat when the content should never sit in a backup.
What does the other person see when your first message lands?
If you are not in their contacts, Telegram puts a bar at the top of the chat with three choices: add you, block you, or report spam. The Telegram spam FAQ says a press of Report Spam forwards the messages to moderators for review. So a stranger's first message is judged in one glance, before any reply.
Two more things can sit between you and them. Premium users can limit new chats to their contacts and other Premium users, an option added in January 2024. And under Telegram's paid messages rules, a Premium user can charge non-contacts Stars per message; contacts always write free, and the receiver keeps 85% of what is paid.
The practical lesson: your opener should explain who you are and why you wrote, in the first line. Our page on writing a first message a stranger will actually answer takes one weak opener apart line by line.
Why won't Telegram let you send the message?
Most failed sends trace back to one of five causes, and the app's wording gives it away.
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You can only send messages to mutual contacts | Your account is limited for spam reports | Wait it out or write to @SpamBot if it was a mistake |
| Message sends, but one tick forever | They blocked you, or have not opened Telegram | Nothing to fix from your side |
| Text box replaced by a notice | Their privacy allows only contacts or Premium users | Find a shared group or ask them to write first |
| A Stars price before sending | They charge non-contacts per message | Pay it or use another channel |
| Deleted Account as the name | The account is gone | No route left |
The first row matters most. Telegram's spam FAQ says limited accounts can still message people who saved their number, and a first limit usually lasts a few days, while repeats get longer. Accounts get limited when people press Report Spam on unsolicited messages, which is why tools that promise to blast mass DMs on Telegram to cold lists burn through accounts so fast.
What we changed on a client's support line
Last spring we took over replies for a small app's Telegram support account. The team had been opening chats with users who mentioned a bug in the public group, which sounds helpful. Within two weeks the account was limited, because users who did not recognise the handle pressed Report Spam on the first line.
We changed the order. The group post got a reply that said "message @handle with your device model," and the support account stopped writing first. Replies to people who write in first are also the part of a cold DM campaign that software can safely handle. The account cleared after its limit ran out, and new chats came in already warm. Brands that sell inside chats see the same pattern, covered in DM marketing where the customer opens the conversation. That is the same logic behind a cold outreach program that respects each channel's limits: on Telegram, the person who writes first carries the risk.
If you send the same kind of first message every day, the bigger questions are which steps a tool should touch and which stay manual. We laid that out in which parts of cold outreach are safe to automate, and set the wider plan in an outreach marketing strategy with one rule per channel. For teams sending updates across several apps, comparing bulk messaging services by consent and channel rules is the next read.
